Chapter Twenty-Two
Katie
She wanted to call out for Warren. To scream bloody murder until the big man found her and saved her. She wanted to be rescued, screw the âdamsel in distressâ stereotype. Katie wanted a knight in shining armor to come to her rescue.
The barrel of the pistol held to her head, however, kept her quiet.
The man had come out of nowhere, dressed in light browns and grays, a smattering of green as well, blending in seamlessly with the rocky mountainside. He moved like a wraith in the dark, and heâd been upon Katie before she even heard him approach. One hand snaking around her head from behind while she looked up the embankment, waiting for Warren to return, while the other coolly held the gun to her temple.
âMake a single sound, and I pull the trigger now,â heâd said in a voice that carried no threat, just a simple statement.
Katie hadnât even thought about testing him to see if he was telling the truth. She was too scared. Even now, as they stumbled through the forest that ran down the mountain from the road, she had trouble keeping up. Her legs were weak and wobbly, practically unhinged by the fear she felt.
You have to do something. Stall him somehow.
âWhy are you doing this to me?â she asked, speaking in a low tone that hopefully wouldnât get her in trouble.
The man glanced at her. He had blue eyes like Warren, but his were cold, dark, and full of hate. He didnât reply, instead looking forward, trying to find his way through the frost-cloud filled forest.
Katie didnât bother pointing out that the fog was settling down the mountain, the same direction that he was taking her. It would be ages before they were free of it, especially if Warren was still pumping it out, creating more.
Which he would be smart to do, especially once he realizes Iâm gone.
âDo I know you?â she asked, trying again to get him to speak. âI can see the hate in your eyes, but I donât remember ever meeting you.â
The man snorted. âYou wouldnât. All you nerd types are the same. You see a man with a gun, you remember the gun, or the badge. Never the face, never the person behind. But thatâs okay. Iâm going to fix that.â
She shivered as he turned and leered at her. âIâm going to make sure you remember me before I turn you over.â
âI thought you were here to kill me,â Katie said, clamping her mouth closed as she realized what a stupid reminder that was to give the man.
âOh, I am. I am. But not yet. Not until I make you pay.â
âPay for what?â she asked, exasperated. âWhat did I ever do to you?â
The man snorted, yanking her along roughly as they cleared a fallen tree, causing Katie to stumble. She cried out, but cut it off quickly, not wanting to give the man more incentive to hurt her.
âWill you drop the act?â the man said. âIt might have worked on that moron, but Iâm not fooled by it.
